Our town is doing its bit to keep things moving in this economy.  For one thing, our local weekly advertising paper, The Shopper’s Weekly, gave all real estate agents an opportunity to put 5 classified ads a week — FREE — in their paper for the month of April.  Nearly everyone in town will pick up one of these papers, the “paper people read to buy.”

It is a really good deal to get free ads in the paper, because your ads go to their online web site, too.  I like to pick up the paper for the Sudoko puzzle that comes out each week.  This week, Sudoko was proudly sponsored by the local Red Apple grocery store.  The paper is also a good source for tide tables, a very important feature in a place where we have miles and miles of salt waterfront.

The Shopper also connects us to what’s going on in Mason County, including the Shelton Old Time Fiddlers Fest that is happening this weekend, what’s on at the local theaters, including the Skyline Drive-In.  I love the drive-in theater, and am proud that our town still has one.  It is an excellent drive-in, too.   And then there are the local plays, concerts, and other gatherings.  And of course all the restaurant ads.  Picking up The Shopper’s Weekly gives newcomers a good insight into our community.

Other news in Mason County, the water of Oakland Bay, the place where we usually go to get our shellfish, has just had the sediment study completed.  Preliminary data indicates the presence of dioxins in the surface samples. Experts with Health believe that people can continue to eat shellfish harvested in Oakland Bay.  Shellfish don’t accumulate dioxins well because of their low fat content.  This is good news!

We have become much more conscious of good ecological and environmental practices around our waterfront in the last decade.  In the past, those who came before us made some mistakes that have caused problems in Hood Canal; usually mistakes of ignorance.  The Squaxim Tribe has been very active in helping to correct these mistakes.
