There are so many beautiful places in Mason County. This county is very much the kind of place many people think of when they think of Northwest Washington. We have forests of evergreen trees, both wild and tame (planted), mountains, Hood Canal, bays, rivers, lakes, beaches, hiking trails, golf courses, boating, crabbing, fishing, clams, oysters, scuba diving, swimming, ferries, working trains, artists, authors, entrepreneurs, timber workers, small towns, views, and more. Mason County is a great place to live, within easy reach of the cultural centers in Seattle and Tacoma, and close to our state capital in Olympia.
One of the places I like within Mason County is a community built around one of the many lakes. This is the the Fawn Lake Association. Fawn Lake is a gated community, but it is not one of those gated communities where every household has the same economic status, and lives in the same kind of house. This community, like so many in Mason County is very eclectic. It is a place where you can say: here comes everybody. Well, maybe not the billionaires…
There are the new homes on the waterfront that have been built in the last decade that are in that $300,000 to $500,000 range, and single wide mobiles in the $80,000 to $150,000 range, and everything in between, both stick built houses and manufactured homes. People in the community enjoy the diversity. There are still some camping lots in the community for those who like to get away from the city, and join the community on weekends and for vacations.
Manufactured homes, especially the newer homes, don’t have a negative image in Mason County. People here know that the construction of many of these homes can actually be superior to some stick built houses, and yet at the same time be more affordable. These manufactured homes have their titles removed, and they become real estate just like any other home — attached to the land. There is no stigma attached to living in a beautiful manufactured home in Mason County.
Fawn Lake is a 70 acre lake. It is perhaps the largest of our lakes that is a non-power boat lake in Mason County. The community stocks this lake with trout several times every year, and have even added catfish to the lake. The catfish are intelligent creatures, however, and not often caught. I often wonder how big they are getting, hiding down in the deep water. The community hosts a fishing derby every year, and some pretty big trout get pulled out of the lake. You can catch fish from one of the community docks, from your own back yard, or take out a boat or pontoon (see picture above) and catch fish.
There are lots of ducks, the occasional group of Canadian geese (usually discouraged from staying), fresh water otters, and other creatures that are attracted to lakes. Residents often see deer wandering through, especially when apples start appearing on trees, and on occasion they get a warning of a cougar sighting. Wild turkeys are also occasional visitors, and residents get pretty excited when they show up, the Toms strutting and parading their stuff. There are a lot of pet dogs in the community, and these dogs get taken for walks around the lake. Dogs are not allowed to roam free in the community. There are a few cats that manage to do as cats do everywhere and claim the right to roam freely throughout the community, but you will only see a few. The community is very attractive to birds of all kinds due to the many bird feeders that community members set out.
As you can see from the above description, Fawn Lake Association is a friendly sort of place, different from many communities in its sense of welcome for diversity of life. While the community has grown more by accident than plan in some ways, it has grown well.
If you are attracted to this community, there is a wonderful new home for sale on the lake, with western exposure (what you want in Washington State). See more about that home here. There is also this wonderful vacant lot for sale. The lot has power, water, a 2-bedroom septic, and cable already on site. It is RV ready, or build your home. See the lot here. You might want to click on the properties just to see more pictures of Fawn Lake.
